Team 107 has been very involved for more than 10 years within their FIRST Community. FIRST Community involvement has included volunteering at FIRST Events, hosting an offseason event, starting FIRST Teams, and providing teams with resources to be competitive.
One way to help FIRST grow and stay active is to volunteer at the different FIRST events. Current students, mentors and alumni have been volunteering at FIRST LEGO League, FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Robotics Competition events for several years. Our build site is located at the iCademy Global School. One way to say thank you to the school for allowing us to have a space at their school has been to volunteer at their FIRST LEGO League event. students, mentors, and alumni have been referees and judges at the event. For FIRST Tech Challenge events, students, mentors, and alumni have volunteered anywhere from field reset to judging and even as the event head referee. With the FIRST Robotics Competition Events, mentors and alumni have volunteered in many positions. Our biggest volunteer contribution has been to the West Michigan District event. Our mentors and alumni continuously fill key roles for the event and sit on the event planning committee. |
Along with volunteering at season events, Team 107 also helps with running an offseason event in our community. Team 107 has been helping host the West Michigan Robotics Invitational since it started over 10 years ago. The event is held at Zeeland Public School, only fifteen minutes from Holland Christian High School. The event brings 36 teams to the area. The teams are primarily located in West Michigan, but we regularly have teams from Indiana and Canada attend the event. The event is a great way for us to show case what the local school have accomplished in robots as well as advertise how great the FIRST Robotics program is for students. We provide key volunteers for the event, have mentors and alumni on the planning committee and run setting up and tearing down the event.

One of FIRST’s core values is Gracious Professionalism. When at competitions, it is easy to show others Gracious Professionalism. This can be by helping them with parts or repairs at the event. During the build season and offseason, we help other teams by providing them with a place to practice. Many teams in our area do not have the space to practice with their robot. Since we have been blessed with a full sized playing field, we invite other teams to come in and practice whenever they would like. They can come during the FIRST season or they can come in the summer or fall to practice for offseason events. Sharing our space has been a great way to help others as well as bond with other teams. In the three years we have had the field, we have hosted over 25 different teams for practice. Some teams travel 10 minutes to visit while others travel over an hour to use the field
